That's fun. How do you know where to put each shape? I would have a lot of trouble modeling that without any references.

Oh, there's a master reference/template, all right (but, I made that, too!)

There is geodesic subdivision methodology involved, which can include Excel spreadsheet math, on occasion. Several books have been written on the subject, most of which are in my library.

Google SketchUp's tools make radial symmetry easy to implement, once you master the technique.

I produce the geodesic spherical constructions, by my own hand, in the 3D-modeling program, Google SketchUp. (Geodesic spheres involve a great deal of rotational & mirror symmetries, so "by hand" construction is greatly simplified.)

I know of no program that will produce such geodesic spheres (not to say there isn't a program capable of doing so -- I just don't know of one.)

I do occasionally use Excel spreadsheets to calculate geodesic vertex coordinates for some models (but only for a few of them.)
